Excursion to the State Tretyakov gallery
The State Tretyakov Gallery possesses a unique collection of Russian art which includes masterpieces which span a period of a thousand years.
The Gallery collection was started by Pavel Tretyakov, the owner of a successful textile firm, and became famous from the minute it was opened to the public in 1870. After Tretyakov's death the gallery's collection grew rapidly, especially after the October Revolution when museum collections were privatised: art was bought, donated or "transferred" from other museums, private collections, cathedrals and monasteries. The latest part of the collection, dating from 1950 - 1990, opened recently, on 25th May 2000.The Gallery was founded by a Russian merchant and patron of the arts Pavel Tretyakov. He donated his collection to the city of Moscow in 1892. The State Tretyakov Gallery has since become a world-famous museum. Nowadays it contains more than 170,000 works (painting, sculpture, graphics, icons) by Russian artists from early religious paintings to modern art.
